INTRODUCTION
PREFACE-PENGANTAR

1.The Situation of Indonesia Indepennce Revolution and war 1945-195o, many written by local and overseas writers , but based on factual information from a collection of documents and personal items have not been many posts that were written by authors from Indonesia by using the Indonesian language and Britain, this is because not many people Indonesia, which has documents and objects that heading, generally in Indonesia were burned out or destroyed when displaced, and at the end broken from floods. Generally when the result of the political situation during the Indonesian Independence Revolution and War 1945-195o in general people are very afraid to keep personal records related to war that could become evidence of their involvement as kolaburator Dutch Nica or republic soldiers and troops fighter will accuse they spy from each side in their area with the consequent adverse to the document or collections owner.

Starting in 1970 until 1990, Indonesia’s economic situation improved and thrived which made government was able to build government buildings ranging from Government office, the mayor’s office, post office, the Office of the court, in addition to offices such as State-Owned Enterprises Pawn Office, PERTAMINA, Hospital including the building of University, elementary school, junior high schools, high schools and so on.
Construction of the above not only in the form of restoration, but also overhauling the old and established banguna banguna new. This situation causes many archival letters, documents and old photos scorching earth, but many also sold as scrap paper in kilogram.
Dr Iwan very lucky, the first time in 1970 while completing education at the University of Indonesia Faculty Medicine found philatelic collection , some rare old books and documents of the Revolution and War 1945-1950 Indonesian republic, and currently serving in West Sumatra , West Kalimantan and Headquarters Indonesia National Police (police Headquarter), while on duty to development Hospitals throughout the area police (Polda) Indonesia also found the rare gems collection.

14 August 1945:
Tokyo. At 1020, the emperor convenes a conference of his most senior military officers. Field Marshall Hata, freshly arrived from Hiroshima, expresses no confidence in Japan continuing the war over appeals from such strong-willed, arrogant personalities as Field Marshal Sugiyama Hajime and Fleet Admiral Nagano Osami who exhibit a dull-witted state of denial. The emperor dismisses their protestations for protracted carnage.

The emperor notes that with the Soviet entry into the Pacific War and the enemy’s use of atomic weapons, not even Onishi’s Special Attack forces can stop them. He requests that his senior officers cooperate with him to end the war. Later, the Japanese announce that the emperor has decided to accept the Potsdam Declaration’s terms and end the War, effective the following day.

That same day, 167 B-29s of the 20th Air Force from Saipan bomb Hikari Naval Arsenal, Yamaguchi Prefecture. The raid is supported by North American P-51 “Mustang” fighters from Iwo Jima, attacking various targets in the same area until 1040 in the morning. 71.8 percent of the arsenal’s total roof area is destroyed. 738 workers, mostly mobilized middle school students, die in the attacks.

Proclamation of Indonesian Independence

The Proclamation of Indonesian Independence (Indonesian: Proklamasi Kemerdekaan Indonesia, or simply Proklamasi) was read at 10.00 a.m. on Friday, August 17, 1945. The declaration marked the start of the diplomatic and armed-resistance of the Indonesian National Revolution, fighting against the forces of the Netherlands until the latter officially acknowledged Indonesia’s independence in 1949. In 2005, the Netherlands declared that they had decided to accept 17 August 1945 as Indonesia’s independence date[1]

Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta, who were appointed President and Vice-president, respectively, were the documents signatories.

In 1945 when the Republic of Indonesia was proclaimed on August 17, 1945, Daan Mogot become a prominent leader of the Security Barisan Rakyat (BKR) and TKR (People’s Security Army) with the rank of Major. This is a unique at that time, Major Daan Mogot was only 16 years!

(1)The first “Giant ” mass meeting at IKADA’s field Gambir Djakarta with many peoples, although was forbidden by the japanese.

Bung Karno only speak 5 minutes “ We will protected the Indepenence , not only one word will off. We had made the Plan. Queit and “Tentram” , but always ready to have our command(ibid,M,1952)

Tan Malaka (Datoek Soetan Malaka) Indonesia nationalist who fight against the japanese , was came to Ikada (Ikatan Atletik Djakarta or Jakarta Athelic association)’s field with Sukarno,

In the book “Hatta Answered “ (ibid Yusni,1981) , Bung hatta said that “ Tan malaka emerged on 19 September 1945, many people say that he entered Indonesia dutring the Japanese time and worhed as a romusha at Bayah, South Banten, in mine there, as a houses servant. At that time Bung Karno, Sukardji Wiryopranoto and I went there , and indeed Tan Malaka was in Bayah. Because he knew that I knew him, he served me tea from behind me. This I learnt later, when he emerged in Jakarta on 19 September 1945. That was when the people in Jakarta flooded Ikada Stadium and the Kempetai and the Japanese army came out with their guns because we were not allowed to hold a mass meeting.

Bung Karno and I (Bung Hatta) went to the mass meeting and announced that Independence had been proclaimed and that we should build up our strength ; we advised the people to remain calm , not to shed blood uselessly and to go home.

The people did go home, and we held a meeting afterwards at Soebardjo’s house. ( but if we look at the photo the man behind Bung Karno wasn’t like Tan Malaka face, they, Tan malaka and Sukarno have different principle and strategy in Indonesian Independent movement, Bung Karno Collaburator Japanese and struggle with political , but Tan Malaka want a liberation war like Ho Chi Minh at Vietnam, they didn’t collaburated with japanese and fight with liberation war against Dutch, Tan Malaka and Ho chi Minh before Independent were study Sosialist-communism at Russia, that was why they called as the communist.Hatta said in the book Hatta Answered (ibid yuzni,1981) that Tan Malaka established new Party PARI, on this basis,Moscow expelled him from the communist Party) .

After the Ikada meeting , .Everybody came home with peace, nothing happen like what Sukarno’s prefered, he could managed the people’s emosion with his very short and powerful talked-auth)

(2)Fiver photos of the Ikada Mass Meeting,

(a)The first IKADA’s photo

Bung Karno with many peoples, marched to the IKADA there were three Indonesia polcemen, and beside Sukarno two Indonesia leader (? Who, Poetze said Tan Malaka because approved by Bung Hatta, but the face not like him , where Bung Hatta ? He was there ?)

(b) the Second IKADA’s photo

Thousands Indonesian people in the IKADA-Gambir and 4 Dai nippon Militaries with guns were standing there.

(c) The third IKADA ‘s photo,

the Djakarta youngmen with “bambu Runtjing”or bamboo spears had ready to protect their country, they were went to Ikada-field to join the Giant Meeting in 19 September 1945“

(d) the fourth photo : the peoples and native armed forces “Laskar” with the Red -white flag and Banteng ‘s flag in the front went to IKADA “Giant” Meeting (P&D

(eThe 5th photo

Bung Karno speaking in the IKADA field, Mr Poetze have seen one man with l hat “Helm” near Bung Karno and the same man walking together with Bung Karno ( the 1st photo) after compared that photo, he concluded that Tan Malaka was the man because he smaller than Bung Karno, Tan Malaka 165 cm and Bung Karno 172 m.

( we must compared too with the photo profilae on Tan Malaka in 1945, because the Tan Malaka photo during in Moscow different, and we didn,t have the Tan Malaka’s photo 1n 1945, please someone comment and shiw us the Tan Malaka profile in 1745 for comparative-auth.)

(3)I was laid bedrest because of Malaria, that many cases after one month Republic Indonesia, the information had came to my ear. This day in Gambir there was the “Giant” meeting , thousand people from around Djakarta with train-wagon were came to hear their Preseident ‘s speaked. The japanese were afraid that the people will took a revanced.Tank and Mitraljoer were standby . My friend had told me that the Meeting with People-action, sukarno said that the Independence not only by the will of Sukarno but also by 70 Million Indonesian people.(ibid,Rosihan Anwar,1946)

(4) In the midday

one Japanese was killed in the front of M de Koning’s Shop at Noordwijk Batavia (now Jakarta), and at that place everybody could read the propaganda:

“ I expect freedom and Justice”( from the Mac Athur at Missouri Sept 3rd 1945).

The robery begun at the people house and the storage building , one was belong of Magazinmessters , they was phone that they forbidden to tell the Kampetai (Japanese Military Police-auth) (SW,1946)

(5) Gunseikabu bulletin wrote that the Chief of Japanese army announced from SEPTEMBER 18th were forbidden to march with guns and another kind of weapons. (2) Patterson send Captain Hayes of the Dutch navy to inspect the Surabaya situation (D)

(3) Three or four days after the Ikada Mass meeting (on the 23rd of Sepetember 1945) the meeting at Subardjo’s house was continued, again at Soebardjo’s place. That was when Tan Malaka appeared at the meeting (I think meneer Poeze wrong, Tan Malaka wasn’t appeared in Ikada mass meeting September .19th 1945, he appeared in September 23th 1945 at Soebardjo’s house second meeting ,Hatta saw Tan Malaka, please comment Mr Poeze-auth)

There was no doubt that it was he, when we shook hands with each other. At the time Tan Malaka to join us, saying(Hatta):”Do join us in the government, for instance by training a propaganda front”

“ No, you two ( Bung karno and I) are just right,” he (Tan Malaka) said, “Let me just help in the background” (this was the anserwd of my queation many years, why Tan malaka didn’t joint the Indonesia Independent (that he was created) Government? –auth), Thus, he(Tan Malaka) did not like to be under us who were much younger, because he was older. I (Hatta) think that was his real reason ( May be Tan Malaka didn’t want to be the prsedent of NRI –the state of Republic Indonesia, he want to be the The Biggest leader of all Indonesia revolutionary area(Peminbin Besar Revolusi Indonesia)-auth). So he (tan malaka) said that he wanted to help in the background by strenggthening the movement and to stryggle to defend our freedom.

(ibid,Yusni.”Hatta Unswered”,1981)

September 25 th 1945.

(a)Two days after the second meeting at Subardjo ‘s House and met tan Malakq, Bung Karno came to my House (57 Diponegoro street,Menteng jakarta), he said :” What shall we do, I have gone too far and have given a verbal promise that, if the two of us are arrest by the Alliest, the country’s leadership will be transferred to Tan Malaka ( very famous and sensational “ Bung Korno’s Will Of the next Leaders “ was true due to Hattas –auth)

Hatta react to Sukarno’s will, he said :

“ That is impossible” he said to Bung Karno.

“ You remenbered , since the Japanese time it was felt ( it was not officially expreseed, but it was felt) that the PKI (Indonesian communist Party) elements were against Tan Malaka. How could he become a successor to the two of us ?

“ But because Bung Karno has gone too far, how would it be if we just change it ? We will give the mandate not just to Tan Malaka alone. Let us take four people. Tan Malaka represent the radical group, Syahrir the emi radical, Sukiman represent the Moslem group, while Wongsonegoro represent the conservative group. Thus they will represent the whole people. Sukarno agreed.

He went home to his house at 56 Pegangsaan Timur Jakarta (near Menteng, now became the Indpendent garden with the Statue Sukarno-hatta Independence proclamations, the house was broken down by Sukarno later and made the Pola building, also the proclamation ‘s PEWARI (Indonesian Lady’s association) statue-auth)

, and frome there phoned Soebardjo to inform Tan Malaka that Bung Karno wanted to see him again, “ But also with Bung Hatta who was not preent the previoeus time” He (Bung Karno) said.

(b)At that meeting, I again explained that it was necessary for the four elements to participate (Hatta was true, until this day the four element alsways cann,t joint together, and the situation always made Indonesia not too stable between 1950 until 1965, and again after 1998-2004, I hope our president SBY-susilo bambang Yudoyono will anticipating the four element to joint together, Hatta was very best strategic heros in Indonesia-please comment-auth)

At the meeting. Iwan Kusuma Sumantri said that Sukiman was not there :”I could take his place, because I am aslo from the Masyumi(islamic party-auth) “ He said. Ultimately a document was prepared with Iwa replacing Sukiman,

Sukarni once said that the idea and the term Republic of Indonesia originated with Tan Malaka, I (Hatta) said :” That is not true. Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo had used that term earlier, that was in 1913. So it was not Tan Malaka’s idea. Cipto was opposed to monarchs . Ad all of us from the nationalist movement at that time were republicans”

The PKI movement , in 1948 , Muso’soriginal plan was to procalim as Indonesia Soviet State,

(the story read at 1948-November chapter-.

Hatta have told us that the public ‘s opinion ,especially the Tan Malaka folloower that the term of Republic Indonesia was Tan malaka Opinion wasn’t true-please comment Meneer Poeze –the Tan Malaka expert-auth)

(1)The Battallion disembarked . most of the battalion went in transport to the Marine school in the south east part of the city. Leutnant COL. Doyle detached “B” COMPANY TO PROTECT Brigade head-quaters.

When the bulk of the battalion arrived at the school, a platoon was detached to protect the radio station in that area “ the communication officer is critical of this move and the deployment of the brigade as a whole at this time “

The rising of violence was so manifest that he (Mallaby) must have recognized that a crisis was developing. The troops in the isolated positions should have been withdrawn into their surrounded by mobs and destroyed. Even the last battalion of the brigide 4 –approximately 1/3 rd of the brigide strength –arrivingon t5he very day of the rising , instead of being held back to reserve and consequently being available to affect the situation, was despatched to the far far end of town where it was just in time to be surrounded and trapped like the rest of the brigade.

In addition to not altering the disposition of his troops. Mallaby did nothing to moltify indonesian opinion in the ground despite the fact that the dropping of the leaflets had, at the very least, exposed the British to a charge of bad faith on the contrary, he seems to have provocative.(if someone have the leaflet please inform us ) (D

(1)The day after the dropping of the leaflet, Mallaby set about repositioning indonesia vehicles in a heavy-handed manner.

This is recorded in the Brigade war diaries :” COL. Pogh commanding sub area ( presumably acting on Mallaby,s order) ordered each battaliond 3 IND Fd Regt to stop and sieze 17 car each. Indonesian occupant very angry , the indonesian response is also recalled by Colonel Doyle.

The Indonesian had apperenty agree to hand over cars , and when those were not quickly provided , British troops were sent into the streets , stopped….. cars at random , removed the occupants and took posse-sions. The british soldier was very disturbed when he heard of this action and even now after all these year they found it difficult to believe that their acted in this way, you can imagine the news of this action, enlarged and distorted, went eddying throught the street.

The same day, the British began the evacuation of women and children from the camp at Goebeng to Dharmo Barracks, where thery could be properly looked after prior to their evacuation. It is questionable hoe sensible this was given that the ubderstanding between british and indonesian had broken down and that unrest was likely. There was a vary real danger that the women and children would be attacked by Indonesian “Republic”.

A rumour was circulated in the villages that Moestopo, whom the British still could not find, had been murdurer by the British.

Indonesian troops moved into position, covering each british position with a superiorforce. Members of black buffaloes , as indonesian paramilitery (laskar) group.

Went around what indian troops would do to them, indonesia civillian were organized into group, each of which was ordered to go to it allowqed station when the time shoul come.

At 4,20 pm, shots were fire south of simpang. The british regarded that at the pre-arranged signal for the fighting to begin. All over surabaya , british possition were attacked. Many british officers have recalled the movement when openhostility finally abrupted.(D)

(g)To make difference, the Indonesia youngmen used the National Cap “Kopiah” with red-white pin especially the men’s face near like Ambon or Indo ( the youngmen didn’t like them because before the WW II , many Indo and Ambonese became the Dutch east Indie ‘s soldiers-auth)

(h)In this worst situation, no one could told who was the Government, there only Government’s Candidate. Thefirst : British army’s Government , but they didn’t announced anything against the murderer and arrested .They only guarded the city, but only in the center area and crossed road only (prapatan) and in that area their policey was nothard.(lembek). They became more hard when one British was killed at Angke. The second candidate, Japanese, altough they were surrendered, in their hand still have the power (Restant/sisa). The third candidate : Indonesia, now they had the power on the japanese later’s offices . The fourth candidate Dutch under Van Der Plaas. They have week powers, and they were afraid to flow their flag .In this time four powers in one city of Jakarta.

(i)All the day from morning to night the red-white Indonesia’s flag were flown everywhere in Jakarta.

(j)In the front of South Koningsplein street’s building (now Merdeka selatan) flowed three Flag: British, Dutch and USA , the Allies Headquaters

(3)In order to had the balance power with the Allied in Semarang, All the national potential ( TKR=tentara keamanan Rakyat, & Badan Lasykar Djawa Tengah) were moved to fight against Allied forces at semaran

(a) The name of Indonesia Postal Telephon Telegram(PTT) fo Jogya still didn’t knew . only the information from the introduction ,Minkus Worldwide postage stamp Catalogue 1972. “The following stamps were printed abroad during the blockage of republic of Indonesia by the Netherlands. According to the PTT of Indonesia, a great part of the documents relating to the stamps were lost during that turbulent time. The stamps inscribed REPORBLIK were prepared for sale Dec.15th,1948 (the nemae of republic was NRI Negara Republic Indonesia of the state of republic Indonesia why vienna printing stamp used Reporblik Indonesia withou the state still confuced, NRI didn’t join UPU that was why cannot send latter by international postal Unuion, the NRI stamps used only local in the NRI area only, I have the postally used cover with lo9cal NRI stamps and also Revenue NRI until December,10th.1948 but vienna printing never seen in thousand postal used cover from Jogya area, please comment.Dr Iwan S)

(The vienna printing s stamps cannot used because in Dec ,27th.1949 Indonesian became The united states of Republic Indonesia “Republik Indonesia Serikat or RIS” the stamp used from Indonesia federal stade(NICA) with and without overprint, I have found in De,29th.1949 the Indonesia federal states stamp with Queen Juliana stamps still used on cover send from Bangka tanjung Pandan to Jakarta, the earliest used the overprint RIS in March 1950 and overprint RIS still used until 1952. my conclution The Indonesia Vienna printing stamps only the propaganda label ,special for USA and other foreign countries. Following establistment of United States of Indonesia, the post offices were informed by telegraph under number 19119/A4 of Feb,20.1950:”Provisionally the following stamps are valid”B”.The postage stamps of the PTT services of the Republic Of Indonesia, printed abroad with several drawings ands value probably these stamps will no more be used for prepayment by public.

Stamps mentioned under “B” were valid only for ordinary Inland or foreign postage for airmail registration, etc. had to be prepaid by other contemporary stamps mentioned in remaining parts of the telegraphed massage. The UPU comemoratives were to remain valid for prepayment [postage until the end of July,1950(August,17.1950 RIS became NKRI Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia, the ordinary overprinted RIS stamps still valid until 1952,and listed on the the Tjontoh or Sample stamps list issued by the Indonesian Post Office ,found by the chief master og Bengkulu city Post officed during he work there, now in my Collections-Dr Iwan S)

nama pejabat PTT RI yang membuat gagasan tidak diketahui, hanya ada info dari kata pengantar katalog Minkus 1972 bahwa prngko dicetak diluar negeri selama blokade dari Republik Indoseia oleh Belanda. FRAME ONE :
Dr IWAN COLLECTIONS
1. Dutch Phillips Recod , Johan Strauss Jr by The Vienna Philamormic Orchestra.
FRONT COVER

INSIDE COVER

On the 25th October 1824, the family of Johan and Anna Straus was blessed with the arrival of a son,who recieved the same name as his father. Another brother,Josef, followed two years later and at quite an early age both children showed undeniable traces of musical talent.
Their father, however, refused to allow them to follow the precarious profession of musician, and although their mother was also oposed in the beginning, she later secretly assited Johann to study music.
Struggling hard for many years against his father’s fame, giving lessons to earn his keep, coupled with the disappointment shown by his teacher,Drechsler, who wished to see Johann become a church musician, only served to strengthen his determination to establish his own orchestra.
The whole of Vienna naturally looked foward excitedly to the debut of Johhnn and his orchestra. Johann’s first appearance in public took place on the 15th,October,1844, and he took all Vienna in storm with two waltzes which he had composed for the occasion ,”Sinngedichte”, and “Gunstweber”
His passion for work never deserted him , and in addition tp 16 operettes, he wrote some 500 dances, including no less than 160 waltzes.
Posterity has has long since recognised the unique qualities of Johann Strauss, and has given him the title, as he was generally known those days in populer perlance, of “Johann Stauss, the King of the Waltz, and the uncrowned ruler the Empire of the Ballroom and the Dance”.
The “Blue Denube” has never been equalled as an example of descriptive music. The waves of the mighty river seem for rise and fall gently, the boatsman’s horn is heard in the distance, and the excited chirpings of the corncrakers and crikets fill the air with cheerful song. The fields, bathed in the sun, are enveloped in a deep silence. Then the Ship of Happiness appears, and, heavily loaded, it reveals itself as the bringer of everlasting joy, as the waltz fills teh air with its immortal beauty.
The “Tales from the Vienna Woods” portrays Nature’s awakening. A Soft call is heard and the boatsmen, loth to leave their beds, refuse to lend a willing ear. Wanderers, however, cannot be detrred in their unresttrained joy, and no one can still their happy song.
Then peace descends on the scene once again.
Mother Nature awakens but slowly, a hushed chirping ascends, and the first sounds of the bells are herad in the distance. Suddenly a lark rises, and a warbling melody ascends to the heavens. Once again the magical themes of the waltz are heard in all their glory.
And how exhalating is the waltz”Vienna Blood”!Joyful calls on the posthorn and the string impel those listening to join in the merry dance. The dancers burst out from the corners of every street, more and more of them, and ever more colour.
Soft notes and the flutes dominate the scene for a moment, and serve as an introduction to a queit country dance which the fills the air, rising to an almost painfully sweet climax. The reflects the unrestricted exuberance of the occasion and today,as the, the heart of every listeners and dancer bubbles over with exhilaration, whenever the exciting notes of this waltz titilate to their ear.
“Voice of Spring” is another description of Nature’s beauty, which in light, staccato style, cannot help conjuring up a picture of airy cobwebs, decked in dew, wafting in the warm Spring breezes.

An orchestra with an international reputation-The Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
When the conductor Carl Stix founded a small orchestra in Vienna in the Autumm of 1899, the “New Philharmonic Orchestra” as it was known at this time, no one realised that only one year later this new group would form the nucleus of an Orchestra of International fame-the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
In 1907 , a second orchestra was founded, the “Wiener Tonkunstler orchestra”(the Vienna Misician’s Orchestra), led by Oskar Nedbal. This Orchestra experienced considerable financial difficulty, however, after the first world war, which led to the decision to amalgamet the two orchestras.
Since 1921/1922, this group of musicians has been kbnown as the”Vienna Symphony Orchestr was reorganised and expanded , notwithstanding the critical fianncial position, and this,in turn, led to founding of the Vienna Symphony Association. This was the dawn of the peruiod during which the orcestra began to take on the presnt form, and establish it international rep[utation.

The chief conductor and Director of the Vieanna State Opera, Professor Rudolf Moralt, comes from a promuinent family of musicians, born in Munich in 1902, a nephew of Richard Strauss.
Moralt even in his earlier years, showed a strong leaning towards the musical profession of his famous uncle.
As a musician on only 21 years, he rose from being repetiteur, to opera conductoed, and he was able, during the courase of subsequent years, to establish his reputation as a conductor at a number of operea House in Germany.
The Styrian Opera House in Grax(Austria) was, however, the first to recognise the organizibng talents of this great artist, and in 1937 he was engaged as Director of this opre.
From Graz, Professor Rudolf Moralt was xclaimed by Vienna, for the Vienna State Opera, and he has been there ever since.
Profesosr Moralt is one of the world’s specialist in the ralm of”Strauss” , and naturally, this isn’t confined to his uncle Richard Strauss, but to the whole dynasty of the Strauss family. This fact is exemplified once again in these four waltzes by Johann Strauss ,whose captivating melodies, magical harmonies and exciting rhythms, have been preserved in this recording by MOralt, in a way which will probably never equalled again by a second artist.

FRAME TWO:
THE BIOGRAPHY OF JOHAN STRAUSS JR.
Johann Strauss II

Johann Strauss IIJohann Strauss II (October 25, 1825 – June 3, 1899), also known as Johann Baptist Strauss or Johann Strauss, Jr., the Younger, or the Son (German: Sohn), was an Austrian composer of light music, particularly dance music and operettas. He composed over 500 waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, and other types of dance music, as well as several operettas and a ballet. In his lifetime, he was known as “The Waltz King”, and was largely then responsible for the popularity of the waltz in Vienna during the 19th century.

Strauss was born in St. Ulrich (now a part of Neubau), the son of Johann Strauss I, another composer of dance music. His father did not wish him to become a composer, but rather a banker; however, the son defied his father’s wishes, and went on to study music with the composer Joseph Drechsler and the violin with Anton Kollmann, the ballet répétiteur of the Vienna Court Opera. Strauss had two younger brothers, Josef and Eduard Strauss, who became composers of light music as well, although they were never as well-known as their elder brother.

Some of Johann Strauss’s most famous works include The Blue Danube, Kaiser-Walzer, Tales from the Vienna Woods, the Tritsch-Tratsch-Polka, and the Pizzicato Polka. Among his operettas, Die Fledermaus and Der Zigeunerbaron are the most well-known.

Early life

Johann Strauss I, etching from 1835Strauss was born in St. Ulrich near Vienna (now a part of Neubau), Austria, on 25 October 1825, to the famous composer Johann Strauss I. His father did not want him to become a musician but rather a banker;[1] nevertheless, Strauss Junior studied the violin secretly as a child with the first violinist of his father’s orchestra, Franz Amon.[1] When his father discovered his son secretly practising on a violin one day, he gave him a severe whipping, saying that he was going to beat the music out of the boy.[2] It seems that rather than trying to avoid a Strauss rivalry, the elder Strauss only wanted his son to escape the rigors of a musician’s life.[3] It was only when the father abandoned his family for a mistress, Emilie Trampusch, that the son was able to concentrate fully on a career as a composer with the support of his mother.[4]

Strauss studied counterpoint and harmony with theorist Professor Joachim Hoffmann,[1] who owned a private music school. His talents were also recognized by composer Joseph Drechsler, who taught him exercises in harmony. His other violin teacher, Anton Kollmann, who was the ballet répétiteur of the Vienna Court Opera, also wrote excellent testimonials for him. Armed with these, he approached the Viennese authorities to apply for a license to perform.[5] He initially formed his small orchestra where he recruited his members at the Zur Stadt Belgrad tavern, where musicians seeking work could be hired easily.[6]

Debut as a composer

Johann Strauss in his younger yearsJohann Strauss I’s influence over the local entertainment establishments meant that many of them were wary of offering the younger Strauss a contract for fear of angering the father.[4] Strauss Jr. was able to persuade the Dommayer’s Casino in Hietzing, a suburb of Vienna, to allow him to perform.[7] The elder Strauss, in anger at his son’s disobedience, and at that of the proprietor, refused to ever play at the Dommayer’s Casino again,[8] which had been the site of many of his earlier triumphs.

Strauss made his debut at Dommayer’s in October 1844, where he performed some of his first works, such as the waltzes “Sinngedichte”, Op. 1 and “Gunstwerber”, Op. 4 and the polka “Herzenslust”, Op. 3.[1] Critics and the press were unanimous in their praise for Strauss’s music. A critic for Der Wanderer commented that “Strauss’s name will be worthily continued in his son; children and children’s children can look forward to the future, and three-quarter time will find a strong footing in him.”[1]

Despite the initial fanfare, Strauss found his early years as a composer difficult, but he soon won over audiences after accepting commissions to perform away from home. The first major appointment for the young composer was his award of the honorary position of “Kapellmeister of the 2nd Vienna Citizen’s Regiment”, which had been left vacant following Joseph Lanner’s death two years before.[9]

Vienna was racked by a bourgeois revolution on February 24, 1848, and the intense rivalry between father and son became much more apparent. Johann Jr. decided to side with the revolutionaries. It was a decision that was professionally disadvantageous, as the Austrian royalty twice denied him the much coveted ‘KK Hofballmusikdirektor’ position, which was first designated especially for Johann I in recognition of his musical contributions. Further, the younger Strauss was also arrested by the Viennese authorities for publicly playing the La Marseillaise, but was later acquitted.[10] The elder Strauss remained loyal to the monarchy, and composed his “Radetzky March”, Op. 228 (dedicated to the Habsburg field marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz), which would become one of his best-known compositions.[11]

When the elder Strauss died from scarlet fever in Vienna in 1849, the younger Strauss merged both their orchestras and engaged in further tours.[1] Later, he also composed a number of patriotic marches dedicated to the Habsburg Emperor Franz Josef I, such as the Kaiser Franz-Josef Marsch Op. 67 and the Kaiser Franz Josef Rettungs Jubel-Marsch Op. 126, probably to ingratiate himself in the eyes of the new monarch, who ascended to the Austrian throne after the 1848 revolution.[1]

Career advancements
Josef StraussStrauss Jr. eventually surpassed his father’s fame, and became one of the most popular of waltz composers of the era, extensively touring Austria–Hungary, Poland, and Germany with his orchestra. He applied for the KK Hofballmusikdirektor Music Director of the Royal Court Balls position, which he eventually attained in 1863,[1] after being denied several times before for his frequent brushes with the local authorities.

In 1853, due to constant mental and physical demands, Strauss suffered a nervous breakdown.[1] He took a seven-week vacation in the countryside in the summer of that year, on the advice of doctors. Johann’s younger brother Josef was persuaded by his family to abandon his career as an engineer and take command of Johann’s orchestra in the absence of the latter.[1]

In 1855, Strauss accepted commissions from the management of the Tsarskoye-Selo Railway Company of Saint Petersburg to play in Russia for the Vauxhall Pavilion at Pavlovsk in 1856. He would later return to perform in Russia for every year until 1865. [1]

Later, in the 1870s, Strauss and his orchestra toured the United States, where he took part in the Boston Festival at the invitation of bandmaster Patrick Gilmore and was the lead conductor in a ‘Monster Concert’ of over 1000 performers,[12] performing his “Blue Danube” waltz, amongst other pieces, to great acclaim.[12]

Marriages
Strauss married the singer Jetty Treffz in 1862, and they remained together until Jetty’s death in 1878.[1] Six weeks after her death,[1][13] Strauss married the actress Angelika Dittrich. Angelika was not a fervent supporter of his music, and their differences in status and opinion, and especially her indiscretion, led him to seek a divorce.[1]

Strauss was not granted a divorce by the Roman Catholic church, and therefore changed religion and nationality, and became a citizen of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in January 1887.[1] Strauss sought solace in his third wife Adele Deutsch, whom he married in August 1882, and she encouraged the creative talent to flow once more in his later years, resulting in many famous compositions, such as the operettas Der Zigeunerbaron and Waldmeister, and the waltzes “Kaiser-Walzer” Op. 437, “Kaiser Jubiläum” Op. 434, and “Klug Gretelein” Op. 462.

Musical rivals and admirers
Johann Strauss and Johannes Brahms photographed in ViennaAlthough Strauss was the most sought-after composer of dance music in the latter half of the 19th century, stiff competition was present in the form of Karl Michael Ziehrer and Émile Waldteufel; the latter held a commanding position in Paris.[14] Phillip Fahrbach also denied the younger Strauss the commanding position of the KK Hofballmusikdirektor when the latter first applied for the post. The German operetta composer Jacques Offenbach, who made his name in Paris, also posed a challenge to Strauss in the operetta field.[15]

Strauss was admired by other prominent composers: Richard Wagner once admitted that he liked the waltz Wein, Weib und Gesang Op. 333.[16] Richard Strauss (unrelated to the Strauss family), when writing his Rosenkavalier waltzes, said in reference to Johann Strauss: “How could I forget the laughing genius of Vienna?”[17]

Johannes Brahms was a personal friend of Strauss, and to whom the latter dedicated his waltz “Seid umschlungen, Millionen!” (“Be Embraced, You Millions!”), Op. 443.[18] A story is told in biographies of both men that Strauss’s wife Adele approached Brahms with a customary request that he autograph her fan. It was usual for the composer to inscribe a few measures of his best-known music, and then sign his name. Brahms, however, inscribed a few measures from the “Blue Danube”, and then wrote beneath it: “Unfortunately, NOT by Johannes Brahms.”[19]

Stage works
Main article: List of operettas by Johann Strauss II
The most famous of Strauss’ operettas are Die Fledermaus, Eine Nacht in Venedig, and Der Zigeunerbaron. Notwithstanding their general lack of modern popularity, there are many dance pieces drawn from themes of his operettas, such as “Cagliostro-Walzer” Op. 370 (from Cagliostro in Wien), “O Schöner Mai” Walzer Op. 375 (from Prinz Methusalem), “Rosen aus dem Süden” Walzer Op. 388 (from Das Spitzentuch der Königin), and “Kuss-Walzer” op. 400 (from Der lustige Krieg), that have survived obscurity and become well-known. Strauss also wrote an opera, Ritter Pázmán, [20] and was in the middle of composing a ballet, Aschenbrödel, when he died in 1899.[21]

Death and legacy

Strauss’s music is now regularly performed at the annual Neujahrskonzert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, as a result of the efforts by Clemens Krauss who performed a special all-Strauss programme in 1929 with the Viennese orchestra. Many distinguished Strauss interpreters include Willi Boskovsky,[22] who carried on the “Vorgeiger” tradition of conducting with violin in hand, as is the Strauss family custom, as well as Herbert von Karajan and the opera conductor Riccardo Muti. In addition, the Wiener Johann Strauss Orchester, which was formed in 1966, pays tribute to the touring orchestras which once made the Strauss family so famous.[23]

Most of the Strauss works that are performed today may once have existed in a slightly different form, as Eduard Strauss destroyed much of the original Strauss orchestral archives in a furnace factory in Vienna’s Mariahilf district in 1907.[24] Eduard, then the only surviving brother of the three, took this drastic precaution after agreeing to a pact between himself and brother Josef that whoever outlived the other was to destroy their works. The measure was intended to prevent the Strauss family’s works from being claimed by another composer. This may also have been fueled by Strauss’s rivalry with another of Vienna’s popular waltz and march composers, Karl Michael Ziehrer.[25]

[edit] Portrayals in the mediaThe lives of the Strauss dynasty members and their world-renowned craft of composing Viennese waltzes are also briefly documented in several television adaptations, such as The Strauss Family (1972), The Strauss Dynasty (1991)[26] and Strauss, the King of 3/4 Time (1995).[27] Many other films used his works and melodies, and several films have been based upon the life of the musician, the most famous of which is called The Great Waltz (1938).[28] Alfred Hitchcock made a low-budget biopic of Strauss in 1933 called Waltzes from Vienna.[29] After a trip to Vienna, Walt Disney was inspired to create four feature films. One of those was The Waltz King, a loosely adapted biopic of Johann Strauss, which aired as part of the Wonderful World of Disney in the U.S. in 1963.[30] In Mikhail Bulgakov’s 1940 (published 1967) novel, The Master and Margarita, Johann Strauss conducts the orchestra during Satan’s Great Ball at the invitation of Behemoth.
